Movie not visable

Please could someone help me, I have copied a movie from the net, but
when i come to play it say on windows media player (version 11), or on
InterVideo WinDVD 4, all's that i get is the "spiral showcase" (the one
that you get if you play music) on both programs, this happens on all
movies that i download.
I think this has all happend since i put my computer into System
Recovery, could somethink not have been added?, Please could someone
help me

How are you "copying" the movies and what format are they?

Check the Options in WMP or WinDVD and make sure the proper file types are selected.
Download/install the proper codec's if they are not installed.
