avi video formats won't show

I recently downloaded some dvd movies in avi format that showed on both my
media player and power dvd, however while I was opening one of the same
movies I had viewed earlier the power dvd screen stuck and it only played the
sound and this problem also transferred to my windows media player...so now
all i get from these movies are sound and a blank screen or sometimes the
visualizations. If anyone can help me with this it'll be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Codec issue - not a Windows XP issue really.

Do a search 'what video codec is a file using' and after using an
application to discover which codec you need, download and install it (or
get a third party player.)
