Movie in Slideshow Problems

Im having a problem. Powerpoint 2003 crashes everytime i
try to view a slideshow that has a movie inserted into
it. this problem occurs when the slideshow trys to play a
slide with a .mpg inserted to play in it. is this a bug
that would need a fix? any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I seem to be having the same or similar problem, except mine is
intermittent.

I've been using PowerPoint 2003 (with Windows XP -home) with no problems for
several months. Recently I've inserted film clips into several slides
(.MPG). The movie clips are activated by my clicking onto them when the
slide is displayed (in slide show). For several weeks, there have been no
problems. Yesterday, at a presentation, rather suddenly, when I tried to
activate some on the slides, everything froze and PP now longer responded.
The only way out was to control-alt-delete and close the program which was
not responding. Then start the program again. The frustrating thing about
this, is that it happens intermittently! About 50% of the time it works
perfectly. There is no particular pattern that I can detect. It can occur
with any of about seven film clips that I use. I can't imagine why it
changed, after working perfectly for some time. The freezing problem also
occurs when I am not in slide show, rather regular view and attempt to
activate the slide.

I've been trying to find the source of the problem, and
I've done multiple tests. I think I may have found the
cause. And it's ironic, as I found that Powerpoint will
crash in this manner after the Word 2003 Update:
KB830000. I first noticed the problem after I installed
this patch, and so I reformatted my hard drive and
reinstalled everything, except I did not update office
with that patch. And it worked fine. So just to be sure,
I installed the patch again and surely enough Powerpoint
started to crash again trying to play .mpg movies. I
reformatted (again, such a pain) and reinstalled
everything, and it works fine. I just don't have that
patch installed. Someone should report this to Microsoft
and see if my theory is correct and fix the problem.
That's my take on it all.. Anyone notice what I might
have discovered?

Tony,
Does only one presentation cause the crash or does any presentation on your
computer cause the crash? If it is only one presentation, could you send me
the presentation and movie so that I can do some testing here? My email
address can be gotten from this post by removing the not.

Also, can you tell me if you have either Video Explosion or My DVD
installed?

(Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. When I read your note the first
time, I thought you had reported the problem to Microsoft. I now see that
you were asking for help in getting it reported.)

My problem was the exact same as Tony's. After reviewing many alternatives,
I finally discovered that the problem was caused by my recent installation
of Video Explosions Deluxe and MY DVD. Once I uninstalled these programs,
PowerPoint started behaving normally again and MPEG clips run perfectly.

Thank to Kathryn Jacobs for her help in discovering this solution.

Jack
