movie conversion

I am using MS Windows Movie Maker, v 2.1.4026 on an XP system.
On my computer are videos from a digital camer. The file type only says
"movie clip". When I try to Import the file into Movie Maker, I get this
message.

"C:\Documents and Settings\Aurora Dickson\My Documents\My Videos\Ava and
Mommy - November 2008.mpeg could not be imported. An interface has too many
methods to fire events from"

I have tried various converters to get the movies into a format that Movie
Maker will understand, but to no avail. I did this last week with my
sister's computer which is using VISTA and it worked without any problem.
But I can not get this going with my XP system.

I played with the program trying to get this work. In tools, Options,
Compatability, I unclicked one of the 3 filters listed thinking that by
hitting the default key, it would come back if I was wrong. But hitting that
key does not do anything. So I can not restore the missing filter.

Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong or how to correct this?
Right now I am very frustrated. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you - Aurora

The MPEG movie clip must be converted to
a compatible format before importing it into
Movie Maker.
