Does anyone know if the procedure described in MSKB article Q314070 (which
is no longer in the KB) for moving a WinXP install to different hardware
with the same HAL still works?

Thanks,

Unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the old one
(same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.), you'll
need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at
the very least:

I installed XP with the BIOS set to show the wrong HDD as the first one, so
I have C with the OS and apps, and E with just NTDETECT, NTLDR and boot.ini
on it. I want to reinstall with the boot drive and system drive the same
drive, so I would restore to exactly the same hardware just with different
HDD.
