Move USB cable means reinstall driver?

If I move the USB cable for my scanner from one USB socket to another then
does mean that the New hardware Wizard will launch at bootup and that it

Yes, I agree with Peter. It's happened to me more than once.

Every USB device has a unique VID ID & each USB channel will
re-enumerate the device and you'll get new instances of the same
device in Device Manager. Any previous entries of the same device
will remain in Device Manager as "Phantoms" (Detected/Known
but not currently in the active Hardware profile.

This occurs sometimes, but not always. Some devices will remove
themselves from Device Manager, but they will leave their entries in the
registry. You can manually remove these if you want, but there really
is no point.

Last note, it should not require you to manually reinstall the drivers
as it should still have the drivers and do everything for you.

XP should recognize it in the other port and it should just install your
scanner either when you boot up, or maybe even when you unplug it then plug
it in when running.

But _some_ devices also have so called "USB serial number", which
prevents this annoyance. If the manufacturer of your hardware cared to
put it in, you're lucky.
