move pagefile.sys to the begining of the drive

Hello, All!
Is there any Disk defragmenter software available to move the pagefile.sys
to the begining of the disk? I guess PerfectDisk does not move to the
begining of the disk.

With best regards, Brock. E-mail: (e-mail address removed)

Why would you want to do that? Middle of the files would be better to
minimize head travel in the "theoretical" PC. In reality the location
doesn't make enough difference to mess up your computer over.

Microsoft studies have shown that the correct placement for the
Pagefile is approximately 4 Gigabytes beyond the start of the
partition. They (MS) have a White paper that discusses it for XP.
I don't have a link/URL but a Google for XP Performance may
turn it up. As to Perfect Disk, I believe it follows Microsoft's
recommendations on Pagefile placement. The only defrag tool
I know of that allows specific file placement is Norton Speed
Disk and I would be reluctant to recommend that to anyone.

If your computer is using the pagefile to such an extent that the
physical location of the file on the disk will have a detectable
impact on the overall performance of your computer then what you
really need to do is to add more RAM, which will improve performance
hundreds if not thousands of times more than will changing the
location of the pagefile on the hard drive.

Good luck

There's no point in it. The pagefile would fragment across the beginning of
the partition as its used. So would other system files at the beginning of
the partition subsequent to it. An exception is if the pagefile is a
constant size which I don't subscribe to.

Norton speed disk in the past had the option you're seeking. Not sure about
now.

A viable option is another physical hard drive with a partition at the
beginning of that hard drive for that pagefile only, nothing else including
system restore option. A different bus system than the boot hard drive is
using would benefit like scsi. Alternate bus system should be as fast or
faster than that used by the boot hard drive to show any equal or better
performance. In this case, the pagefile may be left at default settings and
never fragment externally. Does not prevent internal fragmentation of the
pagefile though.

Actually if the page file were specified with a substantial minimum
size it would remain unfragmented.

All of these shenanigans with the page file will result in a
performance improvement that is approximately
..000000000000000000000001% of what would be achieved by adding
additional RAM so as to obviate the need to relocate active memory
content from RAM to the pagefile.
