mouse arrow starts on screen but then becomes eratic and
finally dissapears which has happened with 2 diffrent
mice.

I have windows 3.1(very old)
any help out there

Windows 3.1 probably won't support the drivers for your new mice. Don't try
to install any drivers just let 3.1 find its own. You should seriously
consider a new system. Windows 3.1 is virtually unprotected from all the
malicious software out there on the web. You are taking a big chance with
security. You can get a nice system for $700 to $1000.
