mouse won't work

I recently upgraded my computer to Win. XP. Ever since
then, my mouse won't work when I restart my computer.
The only way to get it to work again is to restart my
computer twice: The first time without the mouse plugged
into the PS/2 port, and the 2nd time with a completely
different mouse plugged into the PS/2 port. It is a
royal pain to have to keep switching between 2 different
mice each time I want to restart my computer. Any ideas
why this may be happening?

Windows XP remembers devices that have been connected
,but aren't currently present. They are referred to as "Phantoms".
Sometimes, phantoms can interfere with the detection of new
devices of the same type being installed.
Here is how to remove the phantoms. Open Control Panel,
System, Hardware, Device Manager. Click on the text field
"View", check the box "Show Hidden Devices". Click the +
beside the "Mice and other Pointing Devices". Look in the
expanded list and Right-Click any mice shown "Grayed Out"
then choose Uninstall. Once all the Phantoms are removed
your PS/2 mouse should be detected and work properly.

Would the same hold true for a printer, exmaple, every
ti,e I unistall my printer it comes back two times, once
as itself and then as copy (1)
