Mouse strange behaviour

Hi all,

having a problem with a mouse on a Acer laptop with Windows XP Professional
installed.

The mouse sometimes randomly jumps to a position on the screen. It might be
once per 5 minutes but it can also happen a few times after each other.

I tried to remove the current mouse driver and reinstall the latest version
but with no result. Also tried another mouse but the same problem.

Does anyone know a solution I can trie to solve this problem?

Thx,
Maurice

Place the mouse on a non-glossy surface. A surface with a coarse
pattern, or much porosity is best.

If you are using a laser mouse (rather than one with a ball underneath), the
mousepad or surface can be a huge problem. I had this same problem for the
longest time, until I realized that by switching to a solid black mousepad
fixed it. Before that, I was just using the surface of my table and I think
it just confused the crap out of the laser device.

You'll notice that neither of the two <bleeps> that replied to you even
asked whether or not you were talking about the laptop's built in mouse
or an external one that you'd installed.

If it's the built-in mouse, try installing an external serial or USB
(best) mouse and see if the behavior persists.

If it's an external mouse, is it the older type with a ball to sense
movement or is it an optical mouse?

The latter is preferred, and contrary to the second person who replied,
it does NOT require a mouse pad to operate. That's one of the
advantages of using an optical mouse.

Also, you should check to see if your laptop can have a setting where the
"built-in" mouse (pad or point) can be disabled when an external mouse is
used. I have seen where both the mouse pad and external mouse were active at
the same time. If something (finger or else...) just happens to brush pass
the mouse pad, the mouse pointer took off in a complete different direction
than expected.
