I can't seem to get my mouse to go fast enough. I have the pointer speed set
to maximun in mouse properties. I also tried updating the driver, it says
cannot find better match. It seems the mouse only goes so fast. It's a
Microsft basic optical mouse. Win xp sp2. Any ideas? Thanks.

I can't imagine anyone having a problem with mouse speed.

What is "so fast"???

What is your screen resolution?

Have you tried a more expensive mouse?

screen resolution is 1280x1024. I have had more expensive ones and they did
go faster, but I wanted very light weight, and this was the lightest I
found. By the way, I'm using dual monitors if that makes a difference. All
this is to reduce wear & tear on my wrist.

I think you answered your own question.

Actually, I already have that installed. Thanks for the link anyway.
Maybe this mouse just isn't capable of greater speeds. At the fastest
setting, it's probably fine for most people, I'm just looking for a little
more speed to reduce hand motion.

If it connects via the PS2 port, then you can increase the sampling rate.
If USB then it may be on a heavily loaded Root Hub and attaching the
USB-to-PS2 converter and plug it to the Green PS/2 socket may help
with movement/performance.

I have to give mine Red Bull almost every day, it works pretty good.

You have an odd problem. Using my desktop with a standard MS optical,
my mouse is very fast - USB and the Intellipoint 4.0 drivers.

With my laptop, a small MS Optical USB is kinda slow, but the Wireless
MS Optical is fast - newest drivers.

Try using the mouse in your other hand. That way you spread the wear to
both wrists.

Latest version is 6.20

Do you use the "snap to" mouse function, just saves you moving the mouse to
default buttons in dialog boxes.
Not much I know but might lighten the load a little.

Good suggestion! Also consider keyboard shortcuts to reduce mouse use.

Microsoft's basic optical IntelliMouse is not faster though you
maximize speed in control panel with original drivers + fixed screen
resoultion. A4Tech's some models are so much faster. I think that's
because DPI / PPI resolution specifications related to mouse hardware
integrity as limits user as well.

I may have to try this. Have you done this, and if so, did you move the left
click function so it's still w/ index finger or keep it as it was?

I am connected via usb. When I tried your idea with the converter, the mouse
was not recognized, even after restarting. An additional step needed?

Shouldn't be. Some of the converters aren't interchangeable. I've
had problems using Microsoft or Logitech converters as I keep
them in a parts bin together and they aren't always marked with a
vendor label. I guess the only other question is did you install it
into the Green PS/2 socket. A mouse plugged into the Keyboard
socket (Purple) won't register in Device Manager.
