mouse "select" locks on

G

George Neuner

Hi all,

I run a left handed mouse. Since I started using XPpro, every so
often the "select" function seems to get locked on, resulting in
selection of every object the mouse cursor or the text cursor passes
over. The problem appears to be directly tied to using the mouse left
handed.

The only way I have found to get out of this mode is to reset the
mouse to right handed use. This immediately halts the problem and I
can then set the mouse back to left handed use and carry on.

I am using the standard PS2 mouse driver - ver 5.1.2600.0. Tweak UI
ver 1.33 is also installed but the problem existed before Tweak was
installed. I have up to date virus protection and I am certain there
is no infection.

I'm getting tired of dealing with this issue as it obeys Murphy's Law
and strikes only at the least convenient times. I have Googled
several times for references on how to fix it unsuccessfully.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks,
George

George, try a different mouse. Does that solve the problem? I have
clients running XP with left-handed settings and they do so with no
problems.

Hi Malke,

Funny you mention it: about a month ago I dropped a book on my
original PS/2 mouse and sprang the button wheel. I got a new mouse to
replace it - no software to install, just plugged it in and it worked.
I've had just this one incident since then, but it obviously didn't
solve the problem.

This has been happening intermittently for almost a year - ever since
I installed XPpro. I previously was running NT4 and the mouse always
behaved properly with that. I did _not_ upgrade NT4, XPpro was a
clean install to a new hard drive.

As I said previously, reseting the mouse to right handed stops the
madness immediately. The problem is that it is such a bother to fix.
Even using keyboard navigation everything gets selected as I try to
move so it's very hard to avoid opening several things at once. Then
I correct the stupid problem and have a dozen or more extraneous
windows to close before I can return to work.

Is it possible to start the mouse applet from the command line?

I Googled around, but didn't find anything useful. Since changing the
mouse didn't solve the problem, you know it isn't the mouse hardware.
The only other thing relating to the mouse I can suggest is if you are
using a ps/2 mouse, try a usb mouse instead. Maybe you have a dodgy
ps/2 port on your motherboard. Perhaps you have some other software
installed that is causing a conflict? Any sort of non-standard themes?
Keyboard shortcut software? Anything set in Accessibility Options that
might be interfering? AFAIK, you can't start the mouse from the command
line and run the Windows equivalent of tail, nor can you hand-edit the
mouse drivers.

Sorry I didn't have an answer for you, but maybe someone else will.

No software aside from Tweak. I'm running the classic theme with most
other stuff turned off [ no active desktop, no wallpaper, no web
folders, basic sounds only, no accessibiliy ] - just a basic NT4 style
desktop. I wouldn't use the stupid themes at all except that
disabling them completely [ tried it ] thoroughly screws up the
preferences and XP distributes the settings so widely that I gave up
trying to find them all.

I like the idea about the mouse port - I didn't think of that. I may
try out a USB mouse and see what happens.

Sorry I didn't have an answer for you, but maybe someone else will.

Thanks for responding.
