Mouse quit working during upgrade

Have a Dell Dimension XPS R400 tower with a serial
Microsoft mouse that had been working just fine with
Windows 98se, but at the end of the upgrade to XP Pro, the
mouse no longer works. What gives?

I just upgraded a similar machine last week with no
problems.

Start over?

Check that serial ports are enabled and working in device
manager.
