Mouse Problem

I have a Dell Latitde D610 machine, running Windows XP. Recently the
mouse is showing some strange behavior, while moving the mouse stops
for a second and then works fine. This happens very frequently. I
couldn't figure out any process hogging the cpu or other resources.

Could anyone please help me with this one? Anyone facing the similar
issue?

I have a logitech mx500 USB mouse.
Windows XP
AMD 64 3200+
2 Samsung SP2004C 200GB Drives in RAID 0
MSI Neo Platinum K8N
ATI Radeon 9800 XT

Check my thread Help Please! My Computer is Screwed! lol... in case we
find a solution. Did you try to reinstall the OS? What kind of video
card are you using, because I suspect the video card drivers?

mouse settings to test your mouse setup;
just a thought.

Yup, I've done all that. I've also tried installing the logitech
software, doesn't help. I noticed that two instances of the mouse
appear as : HID-compliant mouse, in device manager. It should only
need one, yet I see two. Disabling one does nothing to sort out the
problem though.

Then, as a test, lower the Graphics Hardware Acceleration in DXDiag, or
Display Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button, Troubleshoot tab.

Try a non-glossy mousepad, one with a rough surface.

I also tried to do a system restore to a very old check point where I
was not getting any problems, however even that did not help.

Ok, I think I figured out the mouse problem. My old BIOS 1.1 didn't
have the option USB mouse support in the BIOS. The new version 2.1 has
this option. I enabled it and so far so good. Just be really careful
and know what you are doing before you try to flash your BIOS. I
almosted wrecked my computer. I had to remove the CMOS jumper and
replace it and the new BIOS got a breath of life. I think it must have
needed to clear out some old settings and just start fresh.

Sorry, false fix there. That problem came back even with the updated
BIOS. So that's not the cause. I still don't know what is. It's
there with and without the video card drivers installed. It just seems
to become worse when programs are opening or the more drivers are
installed. Just crappy programming perhaps, I don't know. Let me know
if you find a fix, thanks, I'll do the same.

I just installed the drivers for my Logitech devices, one is the mx500
corded mouse and the other is the Elite Keyboard. Though I don't think
it's completely disappeared it's actually much better now. I never
bothered installing the drivers for the keyboard before but it does
seem to make a difference.

Also, disable all acceleration and enhancements to movement.

So since I have a logitech and not a microsoft mouse I set em_exec.exe
to "realtime" priority in task manager. Right click the process in
task manager and select priority.

It's not a fix, since I can still detect the problem, but every little
bit helps.

The strange thing is I never had this problem for months, close to a
year, with this exact same setup. So in my opinion it's due to
misguided programming in an XP update perhaps. I don't see any
conflicts with the mouse in my system. Maybe they fixed something and
broke this, who knows...?

Ok, I don't know why I didn't notice this before, but the problem seems
to coincide with being on the internet. For example, when I'm doing a
fresh install I'm not connected to the internet most of the time so I
don't notice the problem. Then when I start to update drivers I'm on
the internet so of course I experience the problem. Disable the
network connection and poof problem seems to disappear.

So, the most likely suspect seems spyware. I've already scanned with 3
scanners, and it's reporting clean. It seems unlikely that whatever
spyware could be causing it would remain undetected for months. I'm
really out of my depth now, this seems like a more complex problem than
I thought, maybe a computer guru could shed some light on this.

I've also tried this with two different brands of RAM so I doubt it's
a RAM issue. Maybe it's the motherboard and I'm just SOOL till I get a
new one.

In device manager I see the mouse is listed twice and even if I
uninstall the extra one or disable the extra one the problem remains.
I'm still wondering, is it normal to have your mouse listed twice? Is
there any need for concern about this? Is it a clue to the problem
perhaps. Can anyone with a healthy mouse read off what it says for
mouse in device manager please?

Maybe a conflict between the NIC and the mouse? If removable, change
the NIC to a different slot. Look in the Device Manager, but I doubt
you'll see a conflict or exclamation point icon. If part of the board,
try a USB connection to your modem or router, or a PCI NIC (10 - 16
bucks for cheap ones).

Hmmm i think you might be right about the NIC conflict.

I found the problem finally. It's just USB mice and some conflict
somewhere between USB mice and the NIC or motherboard, or OS, who
knows...

Anyway, I completely overlooked the obvious. I did try another mouse
before but that was a Microsoft Optical USB mouse. So both USB devices
were having this problem. I switched out the mouse for an old
Microsoft PS/2 roller mouse and the problem has not reappeared
whatsoever, not even slightly. So it's definitely a USB problem in my
view.

I had nothing but problems with my D Link Router that didn't even last
a year before it would drop the connection every few minutes. Switched
to an old Link Sys router and the thing still works perfectly. At the
same time I bought the D Link Router, I got a D Link NIC. That's what
I'm using now. So I wouldn't be surprised if this junk is giving out.
I think I should try putting in my old Link Sys card to see what
happens.

Well the mouse problem is still gone with PS/2 roller mice. However,
when I put the adapter to change the USB optical to PS/2 the lag is
gone... but now it will go beserk after about half an hour, scattering
my windows around and opening and closing stuff. It will show the
symbol as if I pressed down the middle mouse button for drag scrolling,
and I know I didn't. So now it just stores up all the lag and releases
it all at once. It's like a demon possessed computer. lol

I should just use the old ball mouse but I'm attached and so used to
this Logitech mouse that I want it to work properly.

Trying the Link Sys card now, thanks for all your comments and help.
