Mouse Pointer

I am helping a friend of mine with her new HP laptop. When she points the
pointer at a menu item (like Edit, Copy) and pauses, the computer will
automatically activiate that item with actually physically clicking the left
mouse button clicking. She finds this annoying and would like to deactivate
this feature if possible. Is this possible? I have looked under the mouse
category in Control Panel and cannot find anything related to this.

I am the person originally posting this message. I mistyped my original
message . . . The computer automatically activates the item by just pointing
to the item and momentarily pausing . . .WITHOUT physically clicking on it.

Most Touchpads have a "press to click" feature that may be responsible for this. If she is pressing too hard when she moves the cursor over a link to an item, this may be seen as a click.

You can control the "Point to select" behavior in XP. Go to Control Panel/Folder Options/General Tab. In the "Click items as follows" section, make sure that "Double click to open an item (single click to select)" is selected.

Thank you for your response. That makes sense that she could have been
pressing a little too hard on the touchpad, as the problem did seem
