How do I force the mouse pointer to switch focus to the
current pane without having to click somewhere inside the
pane?

It's known as X-mouse. You can switch this feature on using TweakUI software
from MS. Go to their site and look for Power Toys.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Mouse - XMouse page; check 'Activation follows mouse' and
(probably) 'Autoraise when activating'. I find it then is a little too
fast in doing so on default settings, and use delay of 400
