mouse pointer flickering, multiple apps loading.

I have several user profiles, multiple people using the machine so i am
uncertain what happenned or if it is a hardware problem.

When i powered up and got to the user profiles page, i noticed one of the
profiles was missing. I logged in, and while the apps were loading, i noticed
the mouse pointer was flickering. I have a logitech, ps/2 compatible
mouse, two buttons with a wheel in the middle. It flickers even after all has
loaded.

When i move it to the bottom taskbar and click on the < icon to display more
icons, it continues to expand and contract rapidly. I checked the settings in
Control Panel, all looked good, says the mouse is functional.

When i clicked on IE, it opens multiple IE's, on the bottom taskbar it shows
it repeating the opening of the web page, like it is stuck on clicking and
just keeps opening more IE's.

When i go under Start to get to Control Panel or Help and Support, as i run
the mouse over anything(all programs, search, etc), it opens it without
clicking.

I tried restoring to a previously good checkpoint, it appeared to restore
but the window that tells you the results of the restore just flickers onto
the screen and then disappears all by itself.

Others things i noticed was it would go into stand-by mode when attempting
to logoff. When i reloaded, the missing profile was there this time.

So much happened that was out of the ordinary. Any ideas anybody?
I assume the mouse would be the culprit it seems. I tried the
troubleshooter, no help. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. jim

Does it happen in all of the users profiles or just one?

If it happens in all of the profiles I'd suggest trying a known good mouse
and see if it works correctly. If it happens in only 1 profile I would
recreate that profile.

Thanks MP and Mike for the good suggestions but i think i found the culprit.
The 'enter' key on the numeric keypad at the bottom right of the keyboard
was jammed down along with the '+' key. Unjamming it seems to have cured
everything.
Didn't know that 'enter' key was functional, learnt something. I wonder if
my neice playing video games yesterday had anything to do with it, god only
knows! :)
Thanks for the support.
