When I'm in Window Desktop and especially when I'm playing games on Yahoo, I
get "PING". It mobolizes my mouse and after 6 to 10 pings, it freezes it up.
I have no viruses and spy infections. I ran Norton Virus check, Ad ware and
Spy Bot, cleaned up all unwanted programs, emptied up my caches, etc. etc.
yet, it's still happening.
Where does this ping come from?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I read other "freeze up" comments in this news group. I did visit the "Event
Viewer". It is full of error messages such "APP Hang". When I visited the
suggested web site it did not help me. I have: Window XP Ver 02 SP 1;
Computor AMD XP 2800 2.07 GHz; IP (TCP/IP); Broadbent Connection (PPPoE);
Norton Security 2005; SSPY-BOT and AD-Aware.
I am just so and so literate so be kind in your answers. If you suggest a
solution plse walk me through.
I would be forever in your debt for a solution.

Hi, Claudius. What do you mean "get PING"? "Ping" has a very definite
meaning in tech land, but from your post it seems like you are hearing
a pinging sound? Please give a better description of what you mean.

Thank you for your hasty reply Malke.
The "PING" I am getting sounds like the first note of a doorbell coming
through my computor. When I do get "PING", it comes normally in 2-3 pairs of
pings, with one second apart....and eventually freezes up my mouse. It
eventually also hangs the page I am on whereby I have to go Crtl-Alt Delete,
get the program running window and restart my computor. It got to be very
common when playing games on Yahoo and just recently it started doing it
while I am in Window Desktop with no program running.
Thanks for your help.

OK, a couple of things come to mind:

1. The first thing to check is if your computer is overheating. You
might have a temperature monitor in the BIOS or some other monitoring
software. The freeze would be typical of a computer overheating. You
didn't say if this is a desktop or a laptop; laptops in particular are
prone to overheating.

Assuming you have a desktop, open the computer and carefully clean out
any dust bunnies. Compressed air is good for this. I usually take a
dirty computer outside on the back porch before I blow it out, though!

Now run the computer open, observing all fans, including the one on the
video card (if any). Without touching any of the components, you can
put your hand in there - carefully! - and feel if there is undue heat.
As you are running, doing whatever you usually do, if you get the
pinging sound make sure you look at the fans and feel if the computer
is getting too hot.

If you *do* have a laptop, you obviously can't open the case but you can
feel if the machine is getting too hot and you can listen for the fan.

2. This doesn't sound like malware to me, but just to be certain make
sure you have a current antivirus installed using updated definitions.
Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware from
http://www.majorgeeks.com, update them and scan with them to remove
non-viral malware.

Let me know if you need more help and what happens when you do Item 1.
