What would cause the mouse and keyboard to not respond? I have tried
switching keyboard & mouse but that doesnt help. the keyboard will light up
but it doesnt respond nor does the mouse.....so I really cant get too far to
try anything!! will i have to completly reinstall windows? (maybe a driver
had gotten knocked out), or do i look for a new mouse and keyboard connector
for the back of the computer??
thanks for your time & help!! breezyyb (pennie)

You've left out too many details. Here are a few questions for you to
answer:

1. The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

2. Are the keyboard and mouse PS/2 connected (round connector, usually green
for mouse and purple for keyboard)? If they are, do you have them in the
correct ports (usually green for mouse and purple for keyboard, also
usually have tiny picture of mouse/keyboard next to the port on the
computer)?

3. If the keyboard and mouse are PS/2, have you tried a USB keyboard and
mouse? If the keyboard and mouse are USB, have you tried a PS/2 keyboard
and mouse (if your computer has these ports)?

4. If the keyboard and mouse are USB, do other USB devices work?

5. When does the keyboard and mouse stop responding? In Safe Mode? Before
Windows loads? Etc.

Answer these questions so we can help you. Remember that we can't see your
computer and know nothing about it or its recent history so you have to
tell us.

sorry for the left out info,
someone brought the computer to me, and according to them, it just
stopped, they brought me there keybord and I cleaned out the sticky "YUCK!"
that was stuck between the keys...
They are the green & purple hookups and they are connected correct, I
tried my own keyborad and mouse and still no response. I havent tried a USB
for the simple fact that I dont own one to try..
I didnt think to even try it in safe mode, but when i turn the computer
on, the lights flash on the keyboard as normal, then they have a password
screen, and thats where I end up stuck because although the keyboards lights
work..(num locks & cap locks lights turn off and on when the "lock" keys are
pushed)...it has no effect to the computer, nor does any mouse...
I hope that kind of answers what you asked for, with it not being mine, my
info is limited....sorry!! but i appreciate the time & help!! thanks
again....pennie

If you are going to do tech support, you need equipment. I would try a USB
keyboard and mouse to determine if the problem is with the PS/2 connectors
(hardware), which are on the motherboard.

You can also test the hardware by booting with a Linux Live CD. I prefer
Knoppix. If the PS/2 keyboard and mouse don't work in Linux, then you know
it is hardware. If they do work fine in Linux, then you know there is a
problem with Windows (software) and can troubleshoot accordingly.

just thought i would let you know that the keyboard & mouse both work in safe
mode and I updated the driver for the mouse, which now works without safe
mode. when i update the driver for the keyboard it tells me that the driver
maybe corrupt and to uninstall then re-install which i did with now
effect...but it still works fine in safe mode...
thanks again for your help. people only bring this kind of stuff to me
once in awhile, they dont have to pay me, i just do what I can...you folks
here have been GREAT help to me with this and I am always refering people
here to find there own answers through you guys...
you folks are more appreciated than what you know!! pennie
