Mouse Jumping

My mouse is currently jumping all over the screen. I would swear it was alive.

Tried using differnt types. PS2 and USB and same thing happening. Looked at
differnt mouse options and it is still doing it.

Any one help?

To determine if it is a software issue, booting an
alternate OS may tell you something. Either a Knoppix
(knopper.net) or a Ubuntu (ubuntu.com) CD can be used
to boot a computer. If the mouse still jumps all over
the screen, then you know it is a hardware issue.
If the mouse is smooth, then return to WinXP and
experiment with drivers or whatever.

I get the same problem when a GPS is attached to the computer when it is
booted. The solution is attach the GPS after the computer is booted. The
problem is that the GPS is connecting to the place where the mouse is
supposed to be. It is a plug and play issue.

I'd also fire up the Task Manager, and see what tasks
are running on the machine, and whether any of them
might be specific to the mouse. (Like a custom mouse
software package.)

If you knew what the mouse I/O name was, you could
use a command line program like "handle" from Sysinternals.

For example, to see what programs are accessing a serial
port, the command

handle -a serial

matches anything referencing /dev/serial ports.

Using a command like

handle -a >out.txt

will dump all the handle information, and then you can
have a look with a text editor at the list.

It could be that some process is writing to the mouse
and driving it crazy.

I created an obstacle course for mine. Just like the Grand National;
cats and dogs falling everywhere trying to catch that damn ..... Of
course I blame it all on the CIA!

I haven't seen it suggested for some time but it can be the result of
malware.

You could have a virus or malware problem, that's causing your mouse to
be unruly. I'd start by checking the hard-drive for viruses and malware, and
go on from there. Fortunately, the best programs for doing this sort of
thing are still free to download and apply ... personally, I use Grisoft's
AVG7.5 anti-virus program to clean up the mess that's left by McAfee and NIS
when they fail (which is very often, but not for reasons that I've ever
managed to analyse successfully, or I would know more), and I recommend the
free version. I also recommend the free ZoneAlarm firewall program, which
keeps all the gitts at bay very well indeed, and Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster
and Ad-Aware SE to protect and clean your system. If you need links and info
on those programs, either Google them or come back to me via this forum.

I fixed it by getting a new mouse. The one that failed was an MS one.

| Was it a ball mouse? It might have just needed the ball and rollers cleaned.

It was a ball mouse, and no, it didn't need cleaning;
I regularly have to do it with ball mouses.

The mouse in question would, just by itself, with no-one touching it,
jump erratically around the screen.
