Mouse help requested

I have a Dell Optiplex GX110.

I am having problems with my optical mouse intermittedly "going dark."

I have two ports for the built in controller card (1.1) and 2 for a
newer controller card that supports 2.0.

I am trying different combinations because I use a scanner, mouse, and
a fairly new HP printer along with one cable that I occasionally use
when transferring files to my thumbdrive.

I just switched the mouse cable to the newer USB 2.0 controller card.

I am trying to see if there is a freeware hardware tester.

Any ideas of what I can check for ?

Thanks,
Andy

It has to be a driver issue for the USB 2.0 controller card. The obvious
solution would be to move the mouse back to the built in controller. -Dave

I think I have tried almost every combination.

Maybe I will unplug all USB devices except the mouse, wait a few days,
and then start adding others.

Hardware manager "claims" that everything is working.

I think I will use low pressure air from my compressor and switch the
2.0 card to another slot.

Or maybe use my old non-USB mouse.

Or get an exorcism done to my machine. :)
