Mouse cursor stuck

Hello,

In an existing or new workbook, as soon as I click a cell,
the cursor is stuck and acts as if I'm holding down the
left button to highlight cells.

Also, every time I open a new workbook, the book number
increments. So if I open book1, then close Excel
completely, next time I open it will be book2, etc.

I tried a new mouse...and tried uninstalling and
reinstallnig. Any suggestions?

Looked in the xlstart for viruses and in the vba
environment. Also tried a different mouse. Uninstalled
and reinstalled xl with no luck. Doesn't happen in any
other programs.

But I wonder what caused the behavior and how to make sure
it doesn't happen again.
