mouse cursor jumps around

I just reinstalled Win2K on my computer and my mouse cursor jumps to a
corner of the screen every few minutes or so.

It's a Microsoft basic optical mouse. I haven't installed the
intellipoint software (or any driver other than what came with the
basic Win2K installation.)

What gives? This is really annoying as you can imagine.
 
The first diagnostic on something like this is to plug in
a standard, plain, wired, non-battery, non-optical PS/2
or USB mouse to see if it also has the same problem.
