Mouse cursor blinking goes invisible in text areas

I just got an laptop with xp pro and when you move the
mouse into an area to do some typing the cursor goes
invisible and is driving me nuts. How do I get the cursor
to blink in black?

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse > Pointer Options.
Uncheck the little box next to "Hide pointer while typing" and
click Apply.

I did that already, it did not work. I had to add pointer
trails for it become visible, but that should not have to
be the fix because I don't care for trails either.
