I've searched the site and the web for this, but with no
luck:
My friend has a 1 year old PC with Win XP Pro (sorry,
don't know CPU details very well, but can find out if tres
important).

His HDD recently died and I helped him put a new one in
and reinstalled XP, fresh. Then, sometimes, the mouse
started to lose control and judder and move around as if
by itself, clicking, multiple windows open, it just goes
mad for a few seconds, frankly, then returns to normal. So
I'm worried, of course, thinking it's the new
installation, but he says it used to do it before
sometimes too.

All patches are uploaded and installed and it did this
before we installed *anything* else!

No, not an optical mouse either, just a normal one.

Any ideas guys and girls?

Thanks for any help at all.

Four possibilities, in order of most likely first:

1) ... You've installed the *wrong* driver for the mouse
2) ... The mouse ist kaput, it is an ex-mouse
3) ... The PS2/AT/Serial/USB port ist kaput
4) ... You've got a Virus/Joke-ware infection

Solutions:

1) ... Install the correct driver
2) ... Buy a new mouse
3) ... Buy a new motherboard
4) ... Scan for virii

His HD died, eh?

Suggestive of more fundamental issues? (Mobo/BIOS/PSU?)

Palladium is not the solution, it is the problem.

Hmm, his HDD died after a, wait for it, house move.
Well:
1) ... You've installed the *wrong* driver for the mouse
It's a bog standard PS2 mouse and Win XP installed the
driver for it. I will check though.
2) ... The mouse ist kaput, it is an ex-mouse
Have advised my friend to buy another mouse, they're cheap
aren't they?
3) ... The PS2/AT/Serial/USB port ist kaput Yes, that's possible isn't it.
4) ... You've got a Virus/Joke-ware infection
No chance, happened minutes after fresh install of xp.
Just hoping it isn't the MB...
Additonal info: During the juddger phase, multiple
windows are opened up, like the button is being pressed a
hundred times, even shutting down the system sometimes.
Does this change a single thing?

Well:

Probably knocked the heads off their parking spot and scratched the disk
(headcrash).

Doesn't mean a thing.

It wouldn't be the first time Windows (or even Linux) installed an
inappropriate driver. You'd think that a mouse is a mouse is a mouse ...
but not always. Triple check.

But check the other points first.
Yes, that's possible isn't it.

Just a question of elimination.

Don't be fooled.

If you have cable/DSL/ISDN you can get infected *during* the install
process. Yes really. It happened to me just last week.

Although the symptoms you describe sounds like 99% mouse and/or driver
problem.

Not sure exactly what you mean ... depends on *what* windows. If it's IE
browser windows then I'd say for sure that its ActiveX/Java/VB script
malware (a.k.a. virus). You may have a Browser Hijacker.

Believe in number 4!

You say it also happens after a fresh install of Windows XP, but I will bet
you that he did a "repair install, and not a clean install. Therefore, any
spyware/malware that was on your computer is still on the computer, doing
it's nasty stuff!
