Motherboards

OK here's problem for ya all. Have an Asrock k7vm3 that is working just
fine. Only problem with is my mike will not work with the VIA sound chip
set, something to do with Asrock being too cheap to put a power driver on
the board so that us people that don't have USB mike can use them. Anyway I
got a ASUS motherboard so I could use my S/B card cause the Asrock pci of
which there are only two and my wideo card is too big and will not let me
use the other one. Meaning that the other one doesn't work either. A7v8x-x
is the brand that I have gotten and have had real good luck over the years.
Anyway I installed it and low and behold when I pushed the power button to
fire it up the darn thing turn on for a split sec. and then shut off again.
Now how about that. Man if for not bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all.
So I did all of the test that I could think of and nothing worked. Acts like
the CPU is overheating and the BIOS is shutting it down. So I took the darn
thing out and put this darn piece of junk back in and it started out the
same way, hit the start button and the darn thing will turn back off in a
split sec. Now this happened about four or five times and then it finely
turn on correctly. Now I am wondering if the Asus motherboard is really DOA
of not. Sorry long story.

Has anybody have any ideas what could have been the problem. Think the
switch is faulty, it is working fine now.Oh by the way I have been building
computers for about 15 years now and have never seen anything like this
before. How about some guesses so I don't have to send this motherboard
back....

thanks
Bob

You should be able to use a non powered non USB mike fine.

That mic input was included for a reason.

Thats the model, not the brand. The brand is Asus.

You were warned about that furious drunken grave dancing...
So I did all of the test that I could think of and nothing worked. Acts like the CPU is

It shouldnt shut down as quickly as that if it was that.

Thats much more likely to be the power supply deciding that
it doesnt like the load on one of the rails so its shutting down.

Likely, or the power supply is on its way out.

Could be an intermittent short to case too.
Sorry long story.
Has anybody have any ideas what could have been the problem.

The obvious possibilitys are that you have a flakey motherboard, you
have a flakey power supply, you have an intermittent short to case.

The best test for a short is to see what happens when the
motherboard is loose on the desktop if the problem happens again.

Easier to try another power supply than
return the motherboard if you have a spare.
Think the switch is faulty, it is working fine now.

Very unlikely indeed. That shouldnt produce that very
quick shutdown, if the switch stays on all the time, that
should see a shutdown after about 10 secs, not so quickly.

If you mean the switch near the mains lead on
the back of the power supply, thats unlikely too.
Oh by the way I have been building computers for about 15 years now and have never seen anything
like this before.

Yeah, its not something that you see that often.
How about some guesses so I don't have to send this motherboard back....

You've just got to eliminate the possibilitys systematically if the fault shows up again.

Three possibilities jump out at me:

1. Improperly installed CPU heatsink / fan.

2. A bad PS/2 mouse or keyboard shorting out.

3. Power supply out of tolerance.

Other things to try:

-- Reset CMOS jumper

-- Ensure JP3 setting matches the RAM clock speed.

HTH!

I forgot one... make sure your motherboard stand-offs and mounting
screws are not shorting to the board's circuitry.
