XP Home not working. Unable to boot into safe mode. Part of
the way it gives error messages. Tried to put in the Windows
CD. Boot from CD. Part of the way, error message and hang.
What could be wrong? If the hard disk is bad, why should it
read part of the CD? Could the motherboard be bad?

It would help if you quoted the error message(s) you see on
the screen. Remember - we can't see your machine!

What is the recent history of the machine?

What error messages? Probably only one.

CD reading is completely separate from hard disk reading.

There are many ways - other than it completely dying - that the hard
disk could be bad.
Could the motherboard be bad?

Possibly. You need to provide much more info.

There was a 701 error message, as I recall.

HUH???

You are talking about something totally foreign to my experience...
and probably to everyone else who frequents this group.

WHERE are you seeing those error messages?

On his monitor, bubba. :-)

Please give the exact wording of the error.
and the timing of the error, ie in what phase of the boot does the error
display?
