motherboard switch

My father's computer had a flaxy motherboard that got to the point where
it couldn't seem to boot up all the way into windows. A reinstall
attempt on another disk drive frozen 1/4 of the way through. So we got
him a newer motherboard that is compatible with the AMD Athlon processor
and DDR RAM. The problem is that this newer mobo has a SIS north bridge
and south bridge whereas the old one had an AMD north bridge and VIA
south bridge. The original Windows install will not boot and almost
immediately after starting to load gives a STOP 0x7B error -- unable to
access boot device. Is there any way to fix this? He had a lot of
software installed and configured they way he wanted and it will require
a lot of effort to reinstall and reconfigure it all.

Thanks,

Chris

You just boot from the XP CD and do a repair install. This should preserve
all installed software and data, but you might want to take a safety image
of the disk first. Imaging is often the fastest and most reliable way to
back up a system.
