motherboard replacement

I have Windows Xp Home on my computer and would like to replace the
motherboard to upgrade the problem is that in order to do this i have to
first get the computer to try and upgrade.

The tecs say to pop the Win XP installation CD in and select install >
upgrade and then swap out the mobo when it restarts.

The only problem is that my installation cd tells me that it won't install
because the version of Xp I have is a higher version so i can't ever select
the "upgrade" option.

anyone know a workaround for this without installing xp on another drive and
copying the mup.sys file over?

One more thing when i try to use the repair option in bootup it just takes
me to the c:/Windows/ prompt instead of repairing and rebooting automatically.

First thing you need to do is to create a new Windows XP installation
CD that has Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it.

XP Slipstream:

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html

Windows XP Service Pack 2 complete download:

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

When you have the new installation CD then replace the motherboard,
configure the BIOS so that the boot priority has the CD drive before
the hard drive, and boot the computer from the new CD. Follow the
Repair Install instructions at

Good luck

Make a slipstreamed CD.
