Have you tried to clear the Recent Document list?

How To Display, Use, and Clear "My Recent Documents" on the Start Menu in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307875

Check your Permissions on this folder, you should have Full Control for this
folder and all sub-folder and objects.

Check if you have full permission and the System on this registry key

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\Count

Follow Ramesh advice, it is probably a policy restriction setting.

If you need some help locating the Registry entries, I will be here for a
little longer.

Was there NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList at
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer]?

If so, delete it.

You could try this. I just tested it on my machine.

You could delete

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}

Highlight and delete {75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}. Log off and Log
on. The key will recreate itself when you log on.

But first backup the key, highlight {75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}
and right click and select export. Save the file. If the key does re-create
then double-click the file to import the key. Then log off and log on.

You're welcome Clay. And many thanks to Ramesh (I forgot about the policy
restrictions).
