More Than One Question

I bought Vista when it first came out. I lost programs, like I. E. I messed
with it for a couple of days, then reloaded XP.

I bought a new Gateway two days ago. It came with Vista Premium. Now I
have Vista again.

I hooked up my new computer. I began loading some of my programs. They
didn't all load flawlessly, but they loaded.

I went to bed and when I got up in the morning, no Internet Explorer. Gonzo.

I did a system restore back to the very beginning.

I loaded all of my programs and replaced my files.

I have a new Maxtor OneTouch III backup unit. I loaded the software and
hooked up the unit. When I went back to set up the unit, Vista told me that
there’s no unit selected.

I disconnected the unit and uninstalled the software.

I reinstalled the software and reconnected the unit. It opened just fine
and I set up the software to work when and how I want it to.

I, then, reopened the program and was told “No Maxtor OneTouch found.â€

I unplugged the USB cord and plugged it back in. Still, “No Maxtor OneTouch
found.â€

This morning Vista told me that my Creative LiveCam! has stopped working.

I have an Emachines computer and it’s running XP. I have a back up disc
with it so that I can reload the XP os if I have to. I’ve had to do it a
couple of times.

Even though the XP it’s on a back up disc that I got with my Emachines in
2004, will the XP from the disc load onto my new Gateway? Is the back up
disc encoded so that it won't work on anything but an Emachines?

I would like an answer to the Maxtor recognition problem and to why Vista
loses programs like I. E. – I feel fortunate that it’s lasting long enough
for me to write this - but if Vista continues to lose programs, shut programs
down and not recognize hardware, I definitely want to switch back to XP.

Thanks.

What programs are you trying to install/have installed? What you're
describing is NOT typical behaviour from a Vista installation.

When Vista first hit the shelves here in Central CA, I rushed to the store
and bought one.

After I loaded it, I had a lot of trouble with IE7. It kept locking up on
me. I tried to find an answer, but there didn’t seem to be one.

Since I don’t purchase computers to tinker with them, but to use them for
productive purposes, I gave up on Vista after two solid days of locking up
IE. That particular Home Premium disc has been collecting dust since I
reloaded XP.

As I mentioned, my new Gateway came with Vista Home Premium, which is what I
purchased when it first came out. After loading most of my programs the
first night I had the computer, IE7 disappeared the next day, again, as I
mentioned.

I have the IE7 disc and tried reloading it that way. I received the message
that told me this version of Internet Explorer isn’t compatible with Vista.
I believe IE7 is the newest version.

I admit that I’ve not had trouble with IE7 again since I restored the
system, but I mention it because it is a common problem between my present
Vista and the Vista I purchased a while ago. I don’t know if it will
“disappear†IE7 again, but, if it does, I’ll need help for that.

What I need help with at the moment is my Maxtor OneTouch III back up unit.

In fact, I not more than a half hour ago I turned it off, disconnected it
and uninstalled the software for the second time since yesterday.

I reloaded the software, reconnected and turned on the unit. At that point
I was able to work with the software. I noticed that it actually did back up
my files last night and the settings were still there.

However, once again, after I closed it back into the tray on the bottom
right of my computer and reopened it, I could not look at my settings nor
open anything on the Maxtor window.

There is a message in the Maxtor window which reads:

“No OneTouch Maxtor found.
Please make sure your Maxtor OneTouch is connected and turned on.â€

It is connected, it is turned on and it worked perfectly directly after it
was loaded. Now I can’t manipulate the setttings or do anything to it.

This, for now, is the most pressing technical problem I have.

I did mention that Vista also reported that my Creative LiveCam had stopped
working. It reported that another program had stopped working yesterday or
the day before, I forget which and when. I mentioned that in passing. It’s
working again, but why did these two programs stop working? I had them
loaded on my Emachine which was running XP and they NEVER stopped working.
Nor did IE EVER lock up or, as with this time, actually disappear from the
programs list.

The most pressing problem I have is that this is the third day that I’ve
worked solidly trying to get this thing to work, not an occupation for which
I endeavored.

I ask you to please help me sort out these problems or, at least, the lack
of recognition of the Maxtor OneTouch. This unit was working perfectly fine
while it was loaded on the Emachines which is running XP.

These problems may not be typical Vista problems. However, I have to
seriously doubt that they’re problems with the programs mentioned, IE,
Creative, what ever other program just “stopped working†and, for now,
especially Maxtor. I can’t see me running around to different manufacturers
telling them that their products which were working just fine have gone south
all at the same time.

In order of importance:

How can I get my Maxtor OneTouch III to be recognized?

Why have two programs just “stopped working†and what is the fix for that?

Why the seemingly unstable relationship with IE and is there a patch or
something that’s been created to stop that from happening?

Thank you very much. I’m anxiously awaiting your answer.
