Programs refusing to install

I have a strange problem, a couple of applications won't install on my Vista
Ultimate (32 bit), an otherwise very well behaved Vista installation.. The
first is Sturmovik 1946 but being a game I can live without it. The other is
a flash creation program called SwishMax.

What’s weird is that both these installed on a previous Vista installation
(I accidentally destroyed the disk partitions.....). An earlier game from
the same Sturmovik stable installed fine on the current installation, it’s
just the new one which won’t. SwishMax is deemed Vista compatible by the
maker.

With SwishMax I run the exe install file, Vista asks me if I want to trust
it, I say ‘ok’ and then nothing at all happens. With the Sturmovik title I
get asked what install language I’d like and it then does absolutely nothing.

I’ve tried disabling all background start-up items in msconfig with no good
result. I did use Yamicsoft’s registry cleaner at one point as PC Tool’s
Registry Mechanic is not yet fully Vista compatible, although I pretty sure
the problem predated me using this. In any case I no longer have this
program nor any of the associated back-ups.

Have I damaged / deleted a registry key or is there something else that I
could try? How can I sort this?

uh... "accidentally"? How in the world did you do that "accidentally"?
Please provide more details. I have some clients who think of themselves as
"office gurus" and I need to know everything I can about how they might
destroy their machines.

Sounds plausible, although you sound like a tinkerer, and might have done
something else to break it.

Reinstall Vista and, when you feel tempted to tinker again, don't.

Short of reinstalling, you could try a System Restore back to a point before
you used the Yamicsoft software, or you could try a repair installation from
the DVD.

Accidentally is short for a situation where a power cut corrupted my RAM
timings, the problem was that when I restored a previously verified image the
image became corrupted through that same hardware issue and destroyed the
partitions - all before I discovered the BIOS issue.. That's all old news in
that I completely re-installed Vista, just given for background.

"Tinkerer": not sure there's enough evidence for that epithet. I know my
limits, take advice but like many people sometimes experience problems, hence
the post.

Repair installations is probably the way to go but I like to amass all
possible solutions before assessing the most likely successful one, so if
anyone else can throw any more light on this I'd be grateful.

Did you try accessing via Explorer, right click the installation file and choose run as administrator?

My guess is that you have UAC turned off.

I have it turned on altho' it's in 'admin'/non-passowrd mode.

I'm not familiar with the effects of that. Try changing it to normal
"on" mode and see if that fixes the problem.

I apologize for my assumptions and the unintended insult (my mechanic
makes fun of me because of what I do to my car). But if you re-read your
post with an admin's jaded eye, you'll understand why I got a laugh from
it -- one that I really needed this morning.

Aah, here it comes..... I redownloaded the newest build of SwishMax and it
installed without a hitch. All I can think is that the archived copy I had
become corrupted by the RAM corruption I mentioned. Sturmovik doesn't but
then Ubisoft reckon it probably isn't compatible: a program released in March
2007 that isn't Vista compatible............ .
