more than one db -one without security one with security

Hi all,
Can someone tell me how access is suppose to handle more than one database.
Example:
old 97access database with security set
updated machine to office 2003 access and will convert database
My problem:
joined secure database
now when I create a new database it takes on the security of the joined
database.
I want to be able to have a second database or even third database that does
not use security.
My secure database is on a shared folder on the server and .mdw is in that
folder.
I created a second db on my workstation and isaved my id.mdw to my documents
and settings under access.
how can I stop it from looking at the joined database security?
Thanks for any help

I forgot to mention that the reason I want to be able to create a database
without security.
Example: shared secure database on my server for user1
now user1 wants to create his own db on his workstation without any security
and will only be used by him. He actually wants to create more than one but
he also has to be joined to the one on the server.

The short answer is that the user would use your workgroup file when opening
your secured database. You can create a shortcut for your database that
includes the path to your workgroup file.

When you open access for any other purpose, they should use their default
system.mdw workgroup which would not contain any password or privilege data.

Hi Rick,
Once I have joined the user to the secure database then I need to then
rejoin that user to the system.mdw? or are you saying that everytime the user
needs to use another database he needs to join the system.mdw each time?
I have an icon setup for the secure database with the path to the secure.mdw.
I'm not understanding how the join works. Is it that once joined (to the
secure db) that it keeps that setting even if you rejoin to the system.mdw?
So the user can actually still connect to the secure db with the security in
tact?
Thanks in advance for your help.

If they use your shortcut, then that tells Access to use the secure MDW only
for that session. Next time they open a database it will use whatever they
are joined to. Go back and join all your users to the default workgroup.
That is the one that will be used if nothing special is done when opening
Access.

Hope that makes sense. Post back if not.

Hi Rick,
Ok this is the way I understand it.
A new office 2003 install defaults to the system.mdw (or if an old install
join user to it.)
Then setup secure icon pointing to the secure mdw and use it instead of
doing a join to it. Does pointing to it in the icon do the same thing as a
join or do I have to join it first?
thanks for all your help on this.

If you join to it using the workgroup administrator program or
function, that will affect every database, from then onwards, that you
open by double-clicking the MDB file. That is usually not what you
want.

If you use a shortcut as already described, Access will use the
workgroup file selected by the /wrkgrp switch in that shortcut, for
/that single run only/. This will not affect any other runs. That's the
reason for using the shortcut/wrkgrp switch approach.

TC
