More on the Windows Installer

Having researched the threads on the subject of
Windows Installer problems, I ran the Installer
cleanup utility, the problem being that anytime I
attempted to launch an Office 2003 component
I was greeted with "Preparing to Install" followed
by the installation progress bar, etc. before the
component would actually come up.

As suggested by Rock, I removed the reference to
Office 2003 and ran the utility. The results was
that I could not then launch any of the components,
the diagnostic then being that the component was
not installed. With that, I attempted to run Office
setup hoping for a "repair" feature but was
greeted instead by a dialog indicating that there
wasn't enough room on the E drive to install, where
the E drive was the CD/DVD drive that I was installing
from!! Though the two resident hard-drives were
listed, neither was selectable.

I ran Restore back to a few days ago and managed
to get back to where I started. At this point, it doesn't
seem like I can clean up this mess without a complete
XP Pro rebuild and back off to Office XP, unless
someone has a better idea?????

Installer clean up tool came out in 2002 i believe, how does one think
that it'll run properly in 2006........
Either way,if youve added hds as you stated, the registry settings are
probably set wrong for youre cdrom/rw for software installations.
Try going to run, type:regedit In regedit,expand:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,
software/microsoft/windows,open set up.You'll see youre cdrom/rw listed,it
needs the same letter as it now has in "my computer" L.click,go to
edit,modify,
adjust,do for each, then close out regedit.

Andrew, neither the hard-drives or the CD/DVD drives
are new in the recent past. There was some juggling of drive
letters some time ago when a Plextor burner was added.
However, I don't think that involve any changes to the drive
letters for the hard-drives.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows
has folders:
+ Current Version
Help
HTML Help
+ ITStorage
Shell

there's no reference to anything relating to drive letters or
cdrom/rw anywhere in that tree that I could find.

That problem has been reported after installing Norton/Symantec
software (Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in). If this applies:
"How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820

Even better: Uninstall all Norton/Symantec software in that case.
