More on font and Normal.dot

Dear Discussion Group,

I have read many posting about default font and the Normal.dot template but
I could not find an answer to my problem.

I start with that I do not have Acrobat installed on any of the PC I have
tried to solve this problem on.

I work in a corporate environment where we have a Template folder set up for
all our organisation templates. In this folder there is a Normal.dot file
with Arial – 11pt normal font.

The logon script defaults all users’ Workgroup templates file location to
this folder.

The User templates file location is the default
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

When opening a new document the font style and size is correct, Arial - 11pt
, based on the Normal.dot, and according to the organisation’s style guide.

BUT:

When I open a new document and select to create a new template, it defaults
to Times New Roman – 12 pt.


How can I change this?

You need to modify the Server Normal.dot and move a copy to the template
area that downloads the templates to the users login as you specified. That
will work.

Another option is to create another Blank Document.dot for File New called
xxxx.dot (firm name or so on such as Firm.dot) and redirect startup template
with a shortcut to the default Blank Document template the firm would use.

Another option is to tell users not select Blank Document in File New if
that is how your users access their templates from the Word Menu File New
and select the template called Firm.dot instead. That way the server
downloads a file called Firm.dot at every login along with the other
templates. Just let the users know that firm users Firm.dot. It also
allows your users to use Normal.dot for their personal autotext and
autocorrect settings if there is no other template provided for their
personal use and is how Word is intended to work as each user has a
Normal.dot.

Sorry this is a little bit brief but it should give you an idea of what the
solutions could be.

nThanks Janine, I did try your first option, but the new template still
defauls to TNR - 12pt.
I will try your second option, as I think the last one might be difficult
with hundreds of users.

You have to literally open Normal.dot through Explorer right mouse click
and edit Normal.dot on server change font etc save it and then download a
copy with the templates you download to your users.

Set both USER and WORKGROUP templates to the same default location (away
from User Normal.dot) area.
