More errors

Recently someone here recommended I upgrade from Windows Antivirus to WIndows
Defender. I did this and set it to scan every morning at 2am. Now every
morning there is an error that says windows defender encountered errors while
taking actions. Any suggestions? I'm getting ready to go back to
Antivirus...popups and all.

Windows Defender is an anti-spyware program. It is NOT a replacement for any
legitimate anti-virus program. What is Windows Antivirus? I never heard of
that. And what pop ups and all? Does that reference mean Windows One Care or
does it mean some rogue anti-spyware program? Does anyone else know what
this could be about? AS far as the errors are concerned, post the error
number Windows Defender gives and someone can suggest a solution. Or use the
newsgroup search function to search for the specific error - many solutions
can be found using "search," and there are fixes or workarounds for most of
the known errors. It might help to review the updated Release Notes for
Defender:http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/about/releasenotes.mspx

I'm sorry, it was a Beta antispyware program offered by Microsoft that
apparently isn't offered any more. It used to pop up with an allowed
application notification every time I opened my messenger. It got annoying.
But this is beside the point. In the morning the Windows Defender icon will
be in the system tray with an exclamation mark on it. When you click it,
Defender comes up with scan results that has the following error: "windows
defender encountered errors while taking actions.". There is no number or
code. I have searched the defender website and have come up with nothing. I
have XP SP2, by the way.

Can you describe more what these errors are? Likely they are minor issues
in removing something--these may be things we can resolve, or they may await
some refinement in how the program handles certain removal tasks.

Some of the error codes will be found in Windows XP Event Viewer: Contro
panel>performance and maintenance>administrative tools>event viewer>system.
Windows Defender is displayed there as "WinDefend" and it records when scans
start and finish, and perhaps what error occurred. Also, there is a list of
possible errors during scan in this thread:

No, not that. I actually downloaded it from microsoft. I first discovered it
under popular downloads...before Windefender came out.

Hi

Then it is Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1.

Error 0x80004005 always comes when WD cannot remove something.

One way is to follow this "do it yourself" removal.

http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Overview

It ends up with an manual HijackThis.

After this get yourself a working antivirus protection:

or

From other companies, i do not recommend One Care !
