More desktop icon trouble....pls help

My desktop icons have a grey back ground with the writing in white..ie, Recycle bin etc. I don't know why they appeared but cann't seam to get rid of them. I have tried the 'unchecking drop shaddows' and 'uncheck lock web content on desktop'. None of this makes a difference of any sort (that i can see

please is there someone who can help? This small insignificant problem is driving me mad

This is generally due to third party programs, start your troubleshooting
from there.
