Monotone in NTSC capture mode

E

Elaine

Hi
Just started to play with Movie Maker now I have the
appropriate hardware. I have captured clips from a PAL
tape with only a little hiccup but when I try to capture
NTSC, I just get monotone video. My VCR plays both formats
with no problem. I have changed all the video and capture
card properies but it seems to make no difference. I have
tried S-Video and cables, still no difference. Is there a
quick fix that I am missing? Or does it just not happen?

Many thanks

Your PAL/NTSC VCR might only be outputting PAL through whatever ports you
are outputting from. There may be other ports to output the NTSC signals,
there may be a switch on your VCR to do this or it may be a menu setting on
your VCR.

The monochrome portion of the PAL and NTSC video are very similar, the color
information is different and at a different frequency and the audio
information is similar but at different frequencies.

Thanks. I tried looking on the VCR for that kind of thing
but it is pretty basic. I think I shall just haveto lump
it, or try a different one.

NTSC and PAL are two different entities. It's a bit like saying I have an
apple and I want it to be an orange, they are both fruit, why will it not
work.
Fortunately, it's not quite that bad, if you want to convert it, you will
need to invets in either a programme like canopus procoder or pay for
someone who has such a programme to convert it for you. If you are not too
worried by the quality you can get poor quality conversions from the like of
tmpg, which adjust the frame rate and extend/crop the number of lines.
Besides the chrominace/luminance being different, you have 29.97 fps on ntsc
25 fps on PAL, 720x480 res on NTSC and 720x576 PAL, etc etc....
If you are watching the vhs tape through the tv it may be teh tv which is
altering the signal to play a form of ntsc and not the actual vhs player.

Hi Elaine,
Under Tools - Options - Advanced, there is a selector for NTSC or PAL for
capturing, also for 4:3 or 16:9.

Uh, a simple solution I did not even consider initially...
