Monitoring sound when recording from a VCR

I'm trying to record audio from a VCR by running a cable from the audio out
on the vcr into the microphone port on my PC.

Unfortunately, I cannot put my stereo on my desk to hear the sound I'm
recording, so I can't tell what I'm actually recording. I need to be able to
monitor the sound in order to cue up the vcr.

Is there a way I can monitor what I'm recording through my computer speakers?

You can if the "software applications" that came with your sound card
support it. If soundblaster look up "record what you hear" in help.

Use the Line Input on the PC, not the Mic Input, you'll get overdriven
and trerribly distorted recording.

Check the settings and levels in the audio mixer application for your
sound card.
