monitor wont shut off automatically

my monitor wont go on automatic shut off anymore. i've
set the power scheme so that the monitor shuts off after
being idle for 10 mins and it used to shut off after
that, but now, only the screensaver comes on after 5,
which is what i've set, but the monitor never shuts off
and just stays on the whole time.

I get that too occasionally on my laptop.
my quick fix: I just set the time in the power settings
to never, click apply, then set it to my desired time and
apply that again.
