Monitor shows blank vertical band on left

When I reboot after shutting down thru Start>Turn Off Computer, the SONY LCD monitor shows a blank vertical band about 2 inches wide on left side of screen extending from top to bottom. Mouse cursor stops at blank band as if reaching edge of screen. Resolution was set to 1280 by 1024 at shutdown. I can remove band by changing monitor resolution to 640 by 480 and then resetting back to 1280 by 1024. Monitor works fine if I unplug computer from wall plug when it's shut down and then replug it into the wall socket before restarting it.

Computer is a SONY Vaio RX991. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am having problems and used Google to search
with "Monitor_problems". Got something that might

It appears that you get vertical bands due to the wrong
video driver being used, or a damaged driver.
