monitor resolution

I have a 17" monitor with the correct driver installed (daytek 1731D) which
according to the driver install prog is supposed to be capable of
1280x1024. When I turn the settings up past 1024x768, the desktop extends
over the edge of the screen, so I can't see more at once, in fact less! the
graphics card is a SiS 315_315E with the latest drivers.
Any ideas?

Adjust the monitor screen using the buttons on the front of it. Please
read user guide for monitor for specific sequence.
