Monitor not turning off

I have set the Power Options to turn of monitor after 10 minutes, but this is
not happening - even after simply logging on and letting the machine idle.
The screensaver doesn't cut in either. Is there some process running in the
background which is stopping this happening? The task manager is showing no
activity. I am using Windows XP Pro 2002 version SP2.

Greatful for any suggestions.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvoius, but your monitor is plugged into the
back of your PC and not directly into a power socket? Are the power saving
options enabled in the BIOS?

Can't find anything in the BIOS to enable/disable power saving options.

This is a new desktop machine I am setting up, and I'm sure that until
yesterday the monitor was turning off correctly. I must have tweaked
something which has disabled this, but I have no idea what it might be. The
only thing I can remember doing is installing a scanner, which I have since
uninstalled, but this hasn't solved the problem. Any suggestions what to try?

Thanks for this suggestion. It is a wireless mouse, although I moved it over
from the old machine, where it never interfered with the power saving. I'll
try swapping it for another mouse and see what happens.

Thanks for this - I would never have known where to look for this link. The
problem seems to be solved by installing the hardware update referred to in
the link. I also uninstalled and reinstalled my antivirus programme, don't
know if that also helped...
