Modifying styles - shortcut

C

Chuck

In Word97 and earlier versions, there has been a convenient shortcut for
modifying a style; viz.
1. select text with a style, say Para1
2. modify format of that text, say spacing before, or indentation, etc
3. click in the name of that style appearing in the formatting toolbar
4. strike the Enter key
At this point a dialog box appeared asking
a) should the format of the text be changed to the style of the existing
format or
b) should the style be changed to the current text format.

This shortcut is not operative in Word 2002 or 2003. Is there another
shortcut available? Have been teaching this shortcut for a long time.

I apologize if this is not a 'new user' question, but I am a new user of
Word 2002/2003 and did not know of any other appropriate newsgroup.

Hi, Chuck,

Go to Tools/Options/Edit and turn on "Prompt to update style".

Alternatively, in the Styles and Formatting task pane, hover the mouse over
the name of the original style until the down arrow appears, click the
arrow, and click "Update to Match Selection".

Jay,

Many thanks. Just what I needed! Why does MS hide it? Should be under
styles in Help.
