Modem

I am running Windows Me on a Dell laptop. I have purchased the XP
upgrade but not yet installed it.

My computer uses a Winmodem, which I understand is software. If I
upgrade to XP will I still have the modem capability?

Yes it should work OK. Winmodems are probably more likely to work.

Good for you for checking *first*. You can download and run the MS
Upgrade Advisor (get it from MS's site) if you want to be sure of all
your hardware and software. The modem is probably fine.
