Hi All
Got a question.
Does a cheap Dialup modem ($30.) work as good as a expensive One ($70.) as
far as thransfering data on the net.
I live out in the sticks here in Mn. and my internet connection hooks up at
26.4 kbps. When i download anything it says it is transfering at 2.9 kbs. It
starts out at like about 14 kbs and drops off to around 2.3 to 2.9.
Would a better modem help this out.
I know a modem is supposedly only as good as the phone line.
Thanks

A US Robotics modem will work better than the cheap ones.. I use a 5660a..
it consistently connects at 52.0 and doesn't ever drop the connection..

Us robotics is a cheap modem.

But i still haven't seen any coment on is one modem faster then the other
running under the same conditions.
thanks again.

OK.. I had a Creative ModemBlaster ISA 56k modem in an old pc.. it always
connected at high speed and never dropped its connection.. in another
computer I fitted a cheap Intel 536p modem.. sometimes it connected well,
and it dropped its connection all of the time.. I reverted back to a USR
modem, and now get fast speeds and no dropped connection.. the moral here
is to get a modem made by a reputable modem specialist company..

Invariably, you get what you pay for.. but I still think that USR is as good
as any other..

Hi Mike
Well i have a US Robotics modem now, but it don't impress me much.
But i think it may our phone lines out here in the country.
Any where out east of town we hook up at 24.6 to 26.4 , west of town people
hook up at 48kbps on 56k modems.
JUst thought maybe there was a better modem out there that may help us out.
Thanks for all the response

Your problem lies with the telephone company.. complain to them.. tell them
that you pay for a good service, and that in return, they should supply
one.. if you know of other people with the same problem, get them to write
in too.. this is an all too common problem across North America..
