Modem Speaker turned off

I have recently had some problems with spyware. At the
same time as having these problems I have experienced the
following problems. Any help to resolve these would be
much appreciated.

1. My modem speaker appears to be turned off. The modem
settings in control panel show the speaker as on. I would
like to be able to hear the modem when dialling. Any ideas?

2. On bootup my default connection screen appears, as if I
was trying to connect to the net. This is not too much of
a problem. Can anyone advise how to prevent this happening?

that sounds beyond spyware...that sounds like you have a porn dialer that snuck in there - they try to call 1-900 numbers when your computer is idle, incurring horrendous charges on your phone bill.
try a free scan at housecall.antivirus.com, and do a search for trojan remover, which is pretty good at finding and removing trojan horse programs.
The latter is not free. but there is a free trial period.
