Hi-

I went to Control Panel, Phone Modem Options, Properties, Advanced, Advanced
Port Settings. I would like to change settings for COM 3. I understand that
COM 2 is faster. Please let me know.

And, I would like to select a lower setting to correct connection problems.
My port speed is 115200. If anyone has any experience in this, please let me
know.

Overall, I want to increase the speed of my ISP connection.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

i don't think there is a performance difference between com ports. any of
them can be set appropriately.

unfortunately, internet via reg tel modem is becoming a model-t. but to get
the best out of your modem, see what com port it is using now. you can right
click and get the properties of the modem device. next find the assigned com
port indicated by the modem, right click that com port device and in the
properties click the defaults button. then come back and select the speed
that matches your modem. selecting more or less will cause a bit of a
problem for the modem.

try to get dsl. the internet has alot of content - complexed too that
requires more bandwidth now a days..... supossedly a 56k modem averages a
speed of 2k to 10k p/sec. but a dsl can avg 250k p/sec. and many webpages
has "alot" of content.

Unlikely that will make a positive difference. I suggest leaving it as is.

Hi Oscar,
To answer your COM3 Q here:
The COM1 and COM3 Using the same IRQ4 opposite COM2 and COM4 using IRQ3.
You may have The Mouse or the Modem set to use this Port, try to assign the
new program a new Port through the Contral Panel.
But if you have IRQ sharing for a serial card that different.
Here the link which will give you all the Info you want:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q92447/

About making your connection faster that the tricky one, if your Cables and
Modem/NIC card can't Handel the speed and your ISP line not a good quality
cable and you live in Crowded erea and near Masts and TV/Electirc station all
these can reduce the quality you recive in connection/Signal wise through the
Cable.
It is not always which mentioned on the ISP package in speed you will get
the exact Number/Quality there is always dwon side to it.

Also on how much Applications you are Runing and How always they Want to
Update (Daily,Weekly....etc) that can set your Connection speed back
Please let us know your outcome.
Regards
nass

Crew-

I want to thank each one of you for your helpful input.

My modem is connecting at a rate of 36Kbps. I was receiving 48kbps before a
recent power storm.

I am going to remove Realtek RTL 8139 Family Fast Ethernet NIC from its
motherboard slot and replace it with my dial-up modem. However, I might have
to receive a new one from out-of-town.

For now, I will lower the "Receive Buffer" by one notch. It's located in
"Advanced Settings" for COM 3.

-Godspeed and Oscar
