Modem playing hide 'n' seek

Hello,

My machine is an IBM Intellistation E Pro running wXP Pro.

All critical MS updates are on this machine (as of yesterday,
when initially it failed). Fwiw I'm using IE version
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

This is my work machine and has a network connection
incorporating ADSL.

I need to use a modem to access a client (pcanywhere v11)
as a tcp/ip connection is not available there.

The modem is about 2 years old. It's a DynaLink V1456VQE.

I have the correct drivers. Wondering about the hardware
I took the modem to Dynalink yesterday and, naturally, it
worked fine, first go, on wXP (unsure if Home or Pro..sorry).

The modem shows up fine in my machines "Device Manager".

If I remove it, and reboot, p'n'p finds it on the reboot,
installs the driver and says it's functional.

It identifies it initially as a "Rockwell 56K ACF II
Fax+Data+Voice Modem" but then bumps that to become an
"Askey 56K Data Fax Voice Modem PnP", attached to COM1.

When installed I can use DM diagnostics and communicate
successfully with the modem.

Here's the problem.

If I try to test it under Hyperterminal it doesn't show
up.

Hence, nor does it show up in PCAnywhere.

I've checked Bios and there's nothing obvious there that
needs altering (ACPI was on S3..other option was S1..tried
that..no difference).

I'm at wits end at where to begin digging next, short of
buying a newer model modem.

Any assistance appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried going to the modem mfg's web site for drivers? The Askey...
attached to COM1 sounds like a problem as this is what one would expect with
an external modem! It is probably the initial driver that is correct but
it's best to verify be physically checking the modem.

FWIW,
Len
