Modem on Dell Laptop

The connection for my in-built laptop modem has been loose for sometime, i.e
When the cable is plugged in you have to fiddle with the wire in order to get
the modem to dial. Now when I try to connect nothing happens. At present I
am using an external modem I had for an old desktop and this works okay.
However I don't want to rely on this modem. I have recently signed up for
talk talk broadband and purchased their ADSL modem in the package.
How will I connect the ADSL broadband modem to my laptop if my in built
modem is not working?

The DSL modem will connect to your computer via the LAN port.

Many also have a USB connection.

The DSL modem connects to your computer using ethernet cable going from
the DSL modem to the ethernet port on your computer. The dialup modem
on your computer will not be used at all. So you'll be fine.

With the laptop turned off, look at the two pins (stiff springy wires)
that make the connection with the phone jack. Are they sticking up high
enough that they're well-depressed by insertion of the phone jack? You
can take something pointed and lift the pins up, making them more
springy; that's when you need the laptop off.. Also try a new phone
extension cord.

The ADSL "modem" will use a USB or NIC connection, not the modem.

Have you tried to replace the modem's phone cable? This is usually a cheap
telephone wire, which you may be able to pick up at your local dollar store.

DSL does not use the modem connection. It would usually use a USB or Ethernet
(RJ-45) network connection.
